About This Spot

Stepping into Warung West feels like uncovering a well-kept neighborhood gem tucked into the rhythm of Rotterdam’s vibrant Schiedamseweg. The space may appear modest from the street, but inside, it pulses with warmth and a gentle hum of relaxed energy, where the clink of cutlery blends seamlessly with soft strains of Surinamese melodies. It’s the kind of place that slows time just enough to invite you into a quiet celebration of culture and comfort.

The atmosphere here invites an easy, unhurried pace—where familiar faces might share stories over communal tables, and newcomers are welcomed as if part of an extended family. The friendly staff have a quiet attentiveness that makes the room feel genuinely hospitable without ever feeling staged or hurried.

Warung West is a place where the kitchen quietly honors tradition in every plate. Vegetables, spices, and comforting aromas come together in dishes that carry the richness of Surinamese heritage with a subtle touch of Rotterdam’s eclectic spirit. Whether it’s the delicate balance in a bowl of saoto soup or the satisfying warmth of a well-made roti, the food invites exploration and, often, a return visit to savor the next discovery.

For those seeking something beyond the expected, the menu’s vegetarian options bring a thoughtful twist to classic flavors, reflecting a steady nod toward inclusivity and care—qualities that ripple through the whole experience here. The portioned meals offer good value without rushing anyone, encouraging diners not just to fill up, but to unfold stories and quiet moments between bites.

In many ways, Warung West is quietly unassuming. But once inside, the blend of atmosphere and cuisine reveals its charm—an honest, welcoming corner of Rotterdam that connects you to a wider world through the simple joy of shared meals and thoughtful hospitality.

The vegan roti with potato, tempeh and beans must have been the best roti I have had. Excited to get back and have this again/try more!

I was longing for tahu lontong for quite a long time and I ordered it here, alongside kip curry. Not a typical tahu lontong I had back in Indonesia which was served with peanut sauce (pindakaas), but overall I like the savory soy sauce. The tahu lontong contained lontong (rice cake), bean sprouts and shredded chicken. The curry was just okay, it was served with fried rice. What made me smile all along was that the seller played Indonesian 'dangdut' music the whole time and even sang along, so the atmosphere was really there. The other foreign buyer seemed to be the regulars, even mentioning 'Didi Kempot', the infamous Indonesian singer.

I have to admit that i really enjoyed this food. The fact that I wasn't expecting this restaurant to be so warming, because from the outside it looks smaller then what I expected. The cultural music wonderful. Made me feel for a moment I wasn't in Holland. The waiter was very friendly. Food was delicious. Usually if I do not like the food, I'll leave some over. And the prices to me are affordable for such a good meal. I am a satisfied customer that will be coming back with some friends. (This was my experience)

Incredible food, fantastic people who run the restaurant. The vegetarian options are fantastic as well, I recommend the Gadu Gadu. My only tip would be to ditch the single use plastic.
